Material Needs Assistance

"When I first got to the Social Service Center, I was barely getting by. I was getting general assistance and food stamps, but after paying bills, there was little left at the end of the week. The Center helped me with food and clothes. They put me in the Job Readiness Training Program and helped me do what I had to do to get a job. They even gave me nice clothes to wear to the interview. I got the job, and I've been there for seven months. It's not enough to say that Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen, helped me back on my feet. They really gave me so much more than food, clothes and the means to get and keep a job. They gave me my self respect back, and that is something that is priceless."

A man smiles because he is happy.

In a society where second chances are hard to come by, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen, works each day to meet the needs of those who need help and guidance to find their way in an unforgiving world. The focus of the Housing and Social Concerns Division is to assist the poor in the community. Either directly in the form of material and monies or in the form of education and support services, 20 programs provide service to the disenfranchised and underprivileged.

Social Services
Located in a storefront in Phillipsburg that houses a food pantry, the Social Service Center provides counseling, life skills case management and job readiness training for eligible clients. A Thrift Store, staffed by volunteers, is located within easy walking distance.

Caseworkers in the Family Financial Stabilization Program, STEPS and HOME, meet clients in their homes and provide ongoing financial management. The office also acts as a representative payee for those who need additional assistance. The Family Financial Stabilization Program assists clients with rent, mortgage and utilities. Program Staff also coordinate all the Christmas donations for the Somerset County programs.

Multi-Service Program
Basic material needs assistance for Middlesex County residents may be available through the Multi-Services Program for rent, mortgage, security deposit and utilities.  For eligibility requirements and availability of services, please call 732-826-6278.

Services to the Elderly
Volunteer Services are provided by community volunteers to seniors and the disabled who need assistance with the activities of daily living. A comprehensive needs assessment matches the client with a volunteer to provide services such as shopping, household tasks, yard work or visits.
