Health Services

Maria came to this country from Honduras. Struggling to make ends meet, she and her five children were without medical insurance. Maria suffered from chronic health problems that left her dizzy, fatigued and unable to work. Afraid to go to the hospital for help, she sought "safety under the cross." It was then that Maria found Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen. Through the tenacity of the Health Services staff, it was discovered that Maria suffers from Adult Sleep Apnea, a serious disorder that halts breathing during sleep. She is currently being followed by staff at both St. John's Health Center and St. Peter's University Hospital. Thanks to the Health Services Division and Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen, she is receiving care that she never would have had access to.

In a country recognized worldwide for its wealth of opportunity, a staggering number of people have health insurance that is either inadequate or nonexistent. The Health Services Division of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen, endeavors to provide high quality health care to those who would not otherwise have access.

The Health Centers
The Health Services Division operates two Health Centers in Middlesex County. The Trinity Health Center, located in Perth Amboy and the St. John's Health Center, located in New Brunswick, offer services to the poor, uninsured and disenfranchised. Both Trinity and St. John's offer Family Medicine and Pediatric services as well as on-site laboratory and medication services. Additionally, the St. John's Medical Center offers HIV medical treatment & case management, immunization, medical and prenatal outreach services. Both centers are open Monday through Friday with a schedule of evening hours to better serve their clientele.

Outreach
Prenatal Outreach is for expectant mothers who might not otherwise have access to adequate health care. The program locates pregnant women and links them with prenatal care. Staff support the women throughout the pregnancy to ensure they receive proper medical attention. Beyond medical care, the women are assisted with insurance applications and referrals to cooperative organizations, social services, ESL courses and education about home safety. The program also tracks children to ensure they continue to receive medical treatment, immunizations and lead poisoning screenings.

The Immunization Outreach program locates children who have not been receiving proper medical attention and ensures they are reconnected with their doctors or clinics. The staff provides parents with education about the importance of having their children immunized and screened for lead poisoning. The Immunization Outreach Program also sponsors L.I.V.E. (Local Immunization Volunteer Efforts), a community based "train the trainer" program that teaches volunteers to train community members on an ongoing basis as to the importance of acquiring timely vaccinations and immunizations for their children.

Community House
Located in a residential neighborhood of Old Bridge Township, Community House at St. Thomas is a supervised, shared residence for eight adults living with severe physical disabilities, but who are self-directed. Community House offers a more appropriate, community based alternative to Nursing Home placement by providing care in a minimally restrictive and cost effective neighborhood setting.
