The Therapeutic Foster Care Program serves two distinct groups of children: infants in need of temporary foster care and older children who need a structured, therapeutic foster home experience.
The Boarder Baby Program offers temporary care to drug exposed, abandoned or neglected infants. Currently in New Jersey, there are 800 infants in temporary care. Of these infants, more than 50 are cared for by the foster parents recruited and trained by Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen. These infants, referred through the DYFS System, are the product of drug abuse, poverty, homelessness, abandonment and ill-equipped parents.
The Treatment Home Programs provide not only traditional foster care services but ongoing therapy and support to children at risk. These children are displaced, disenfranchised, and alone. The families who care for these children are trained by Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen, to provide a warm, nurturing home with the level of structure and supervision these children need to thrive. The programs provide a Master's level clinician for weekly visits, case management and referral assistance to ensure that these children are well cared for, protected and safe.
The Adoption Support & Advocacy Program works with children in DYFS Foster Care and Pre-Adoptive homes to ensure a stable transition from foster placement to adoption. Program clinicians provide in-home behavioral therapy and case management support as the family moves towards adoption.
The Home Study Unit recruits potential foster families. Applicants complete a screening process that includes fingerprinting, local police checks, interviews, home visits and reference checking. The Home Study Unit also arranges for pre-service education and continued training of all TFC foster parents.
